South Korea is accelerating the development of offshore wind power as part of its national energy transition strategy, with large-scale projects emerging along the country’s southern and western coasts. Among them, the Wando Geumil Offshore Wind Power Project in Wando County, Jeollanam-do Province, is drawing attention as one of the largest renewable energy infrastructure initiatives currently underway in the country.

Hana Bank and Korea South-East Power (KOEN) recently signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly promote the construction of a 600-megawatt offshore wind farm near Geumil-eup in Wando County. The project represents a significant milestone in South Korea’s efforts to expand renewable energy generation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The Wando Geumil offshore wind farm will be built in waters off the coast of Wando, a region known for its strong wind conditions and strategic location in the southwestern maritime zone of the Korean Peninsula. The project is currently advancing through key permitting stages and is expected to begin construction within the year.

Korea South-East Power, one of the major power generation subsidiaries of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), will play a central role in project development and operation. Hana Bank will participate in financial structuring and project financing, marking a new model in which private financial institutions actively engage in renewable energy infrastructure development from the early planning stage.

Under the cooperation agreement, both organizations will collaborate across the entire project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, project structuring, financing arrangements, construction, and operational management. The partnership reflects South Korea’s broader strategy to integrate public utilities, financial institutions, and private industry into large-scale clean energy projects.

The electricity generated from the Wando Geumil offshore wind farm is expected to support emerging industries in the Honam region, including AI data centers and advanced strategic industries that require stable and large-scale electricity supply. This connection between renewable energy and digital infrastructure is becoming a key feature of South Korea’s new energy policy.

Local governments in Jeollanam-do Province also see the offshore wind initiative as an opportunity to stimulate regional economic development. Offshore wind projects require extensive supply chains involving turbine manufacturing, marine engineering, port logistics, maintenance services, and specialized construction vessels. As a result, coastal regions like Wando are positioning themselves as new hubs for renewable energy industry clusters.

Industry analysts note that South Korea has one of the most ambitious offshore wind expansion plans in Asia. The government aims to significantly increase offshore wind capacity over the coming decades, taking advantage of the country’s long coastline and strong marine wind resources.

Financial institutions are also becoming increasingly involved in renewable energy development. Hana Bank stated that it plans to strengthen the stability of financing structures for offshore wind projects and actively participate in productive financing models that support the real economy, including renewable energy, solar power, and wind power sectors.

Energy experts say the Wando Geumil project illustrates how public utilities, financial institutions, and regional governments can collaborate to accelerate the transition toward carbon-neutral energy systems.

As South Korea continues to invest in offshore wind farms across coastal regions such as Jeollanam-do, Jeju, and the Yellow Sea corridor, projects like the Wando Geumil Offshore Wind Farm are expected to become key pillars of the country’s renewable energy future.
